Back in the saddle with Burnaby's arts scene

Ask anyone who saw me dancing around the office last Friday morning (assuming we can call the uncoordinated, ungraceful jumping-twirling-arm-waving thing I do dancing), and you'll soon learn that I am indeed back at my own desk.

Ask anyone who saw me dancing around the office last Friday morning (assuming we can call the uncoordinated, ungraceful jumping-twirling-arm-waving thing I do dancing), and you'll soon learn that I am indeed back at my own desk.

After filling in for vacationing editor Pat Tracy for the summer, I have returned to my regularly scheduled programming and am now back on the arts beat - so capably watched over by the lovely Christina Myers for the summer.

Please feel free to contact me with all your arts and entertainment news and tips - email me at jmaclellan@burnabynow. com, find me on Twitter @juliemaclellan, or come befriend me on Facebook, www.facebook.com/ JulieLMacLellan.

SING IT LOUD

Love to sing? Looking to belong to a high-quality choral ensemble?

Singers of all voice types are being invited to audition for the newly formed Burnaby Chamber Choir, an SATB ensemble that will be devoted to "performing the finest gems of the sacred and secular choral repertoire in an intimate setting," as a press release explains.

Marc D'Anjou, recently arrived from Quebec City - where he directed the Quebec Symphony Orchestra Choir, the Laval University Choir and the Ensemble Polyphonique de Québec - will lead the new choir.

Marc is looking for singers with accurate pitch and good ensemble singing ability. During an audition, singers will be asked to sing simple scales and intervals, reproduce melodies played on the piano and sing a short song of their choice.

Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings at South Burnaby United Church, at Gray Avenue and Rumble Street.

To audition, email Marc at burnabychamberchoir@ gmail.com - provide your name, your voice part, your email address, your phone number, the best time to call and a brief summary of your choral experience.

GET INVOLVED

The Burnaby Artists Guild is calling on everyone to get involved in Culture Days.

Culture Days is a nationwide event held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, designed to encourage and promote arts and culture in communities.

The Burnaby Artists Guild is spearheading plans to create a mosaic mural with participation from the Community, to be unveiled on Oct. 28 at the group's fall exhibition and sale at Shadbolt Centre.

Every member of the community, of any age, is invited to take part.

Participants will have about two hours to complete a five-by-seven-inch canvas that will become part of a large mural.

Everyone wanting to get involved is invited to turn out on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Edmonds Community Centre for 55-plus at 7282 Kingsway - between 9: 30 and 11: 30 a.m. or between 4 and 8 p.m.

Canvases, acrylic paint and brushes will be distributed to participants, and the activity will be supervised by members of the guild.

The project is being presented in partnership with the Edmonds Community Centre for 55-plus and Opus Framing.
