BCA's Gu, independent Hillman unofficial winners of Burnaby byelection

Burnaby Citizens Association candidate Alison Gu and independent Mike Hillman have been elected to council, according to unofficial results

Burnaby Citizens Association candidate Alison Gu dominated the Burnaby byelection - winning a seat on council - but her teammate Baljinder Narang appears to have fallen short Saturday night.

The unofficial results posted on the City of Burnaby website have Gu winning with  4,994 votes, with independent Mike Hillman taking the second seat up for grabs with 3,227.

Gu becomes just the second woman on Burnaby council, joining Colleen Jordan.

Narang, a former Burnaby school trustee, finished in third with 3,103 votes while ex-city councillor Lee Rankin finished fourth with 3,061.

Voter turnout was a dismal 8.36% - less than the 10% in the recent Richmond city council byelection, in which voters had the choice of a mail-in ballot. Burnaby didn't give voters that option. You can find the full results for all 14 candidates here.

Green candidate Mehreen Chaudry finished in fifth spot with 2,212 votes.

The byelections were made necessary after two city councillors – Nick Volkow with the Burnaby Citizens Association and recent independent Paul McDonell – died within a few weeks of one another last summer.

The BCA currently has three members on council, James Wang, Sav Dhaliwal and Pietro Calendino. Two council members, Dan Johnston and Jordan, quit the party last year.

Gu is an environmental activist who spoke passionately about the subject in her interview with the NOW.

Here is what Hillman told the NOW in response to our questionnaire.
