The BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) is applauding the removal of the number of hours one can work when studying in Canada from overseas.

International students could only work a maximum of 20 hours per week, but, as of Nov. 15 this year, they can exceed that amount.

The program is currently set to run until Dec. 31, 2023.

"This is a huge step forward for international education in Canada," Nolan Nordwall, BCITSA spokesperson, said in a BC Federation of Students news release.

"I know a lot of my peers will be relieved by this news. I'm pleased to see the Federal Government empowering international students to offset their exceptionally high tuition."

The BC Federation of Students says giving international students the ability to work more than 20 hours a week will open doors to new jobs and "less precarious" work.

The federation also said with the tuition amount international students pay, working more than 20 hours a week will help them afford an education as fees increase.

International students pay an average of $36,100 a year in tuition, which the federation says is an increase of 430 per cent compared to domestic students.

Fees are also unregulated and fees have risen more than 20 per cent year to year.

"This is a big win for international students," BC Federation of Students chairperson Melissa Chirino added.

"Compared to the cost of living in Canada, 20 hours does not go a long way. This decision alleviates some of the financial burden these students face on a daily basis while recognizing there’s more work to be done."
