A visitor to Burnaby Village Museum caused quite a scare, causing a police response.

At 8:30 a.m. this morning, museum staff were alerted to a possible bear sighting down in the creek that runs through the grounds, according to Nancy Stagg, marketing coordinator for the museum.

With a few hours before the museum opened to the public, Staff locked down the grounds, remained indoors and called Burnaby RCMP, who arrived along with conservation officers in tow.

A source who asked to remain anonymous said the bear was seen being chased out of the park around noon towards the intersection of Buckingham Avenue and Burris Street.

The source also said that bear is a juvenile and was not aggressive towards humans.

The creek where the bear was originally seen under Deer Lake Avenue and connects Deer Lake Park with Burnaby Lake, and may account for how the bear got onto the museum grounds.
