SFU Community Trust and Simon Fraser University's residence and housing department are hosting a talk on bear safety next week.
"Around this time of year we tend to have a lot of bear sightings," said Pansy Hui, community relations assistant with SFU Community Trust. "We thought it would be good to increase awareness upon the mountain."
The talk is on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Saywell Hall room at SFU's Burnaby campus.
David Cox, the conservation officer in charge of Burnaby, will be the guest speaker.
Audience members will have a chance to ask questions and learn about bear safety.
In late July, Cox told the NOW there had been a number of bear sightings on Burnaby Mountain, and in particular, a mom with cubs.
"The volume of calls has gone down (since then), but we still know the bears are there. We've been getting a couple of calls here and there," he said. "We still have bear activity up there."
Cox said the bear talk was a great opportunity, not just for those in the SFU area, but for anyone who's planning to go camping or spend time outdoors.
"It never hurts to be bear aware and bear smart," he said.
