If you think you're seeing a lot of teal across Burnaby Monday night, don't worry, you haven't time travelled back to the 1990s.

City hall, as well as the illuminations along the BC Parkway between Patterson and Edmonds SkyTrain stations, will be among dozens of landmarks around Metro Vancouver that will be aglow for Big Brothers and Big Sisters on Sept. 18.

Other prominent sites include the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, BC Place and the sails at Canada Place, as well as Science World, which will rejoin the light-up party after being left in the dark last year because of maintenance.

It's the first year the event has spread beyond Vancouver.

In a news release, the organization said it hopes the mass lighting will raise awareness of Brig Brothers and Big Sisters programs and perhaps spark interest from new volunteers to mentor more than 700 youth in Burnaby, the Tri-Cities, New Westminster, Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Delta, White Rock and North Shore.

"There are hundreds of children who could greatly benefit from a mentor, if they had one," said Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) spokesperson Rosa Higgins.

She added the need has become particularly acute since the pandemic; prior to 2020 it helped more than 1,000 children annually.
