School liaison officer Const. Frank Tarape conducts speed enforcement by Cariboo Hill Secondary School Thursday under an electronic sign showing him warning speeders to slow down in the school zone.

A big electronic image of a cop warning people to slow down wasn’t enough to deter one driver from blowing through a Burnaby school zone at 74 km/h Thursday morning.

Burnaby RCMP were out doing an enforcement blitz in school and playground zones around the city to remind drivers to keep their speed down to 30 km/h.

On 16th Avenue by Cariboo Hill Secondary school, a photo of school liaison officer Const. Frank Tarape wagging a cautioning finger at drivers was splashed onto the school’s large electronic sign.

Below it was an identical, real-life Tarape wielding a speed gun.

No sooner had his image gone up than a woman, failing to notice the sign, Tarape or – apparently – the school zone sign was clocked at 74 km/h.

She told officers she was in a hurry, police said.

The driver, a Burnaby resident in her early 60s, was issued a $253 fine.
