Bonsor rec gets upgrades

Changes coming for Metrotown area public facility

Bonsor Recreation Complex is bound to be a little bit cooler after two of the centre's air conditioning units are replaced.

Burnaby council gave its approval for $343,470 in funding for the replacement contract, which went to Black and McDonald Ltd., at the July 16 council meeting.

The replacements were included in the city's 2012 Annual Financial Plan.

The city is also looking into converting a portion of the complex - 3,340 square feet of space occupied by the Bonsor Seniors Centre until fall 2013 - into a multi-purpose space once the centre relocates.

Plans for the redesign of that space could also include upgrades to the complex's air conditioning system, according to Wendy Scott, assistant director of parks, recreation and cultural services.

Managing air conditioning - which might need to be high for one class and lowered quickly for the next one, such as a yoga class - can be a challenge, she said in an interview with the NOW earlier this month.

The architect might say the air conditioning system needs to be upgraded to achieve that, she added.

The city has a budget of $150,000 to redesign the space, according to Scott, and hopes to begin a request for proposal process for that in August or September.

The total cost of the renovation is expected to be between $1 million and $1.5 million, she said.

She added the architect would be the one to tell the city what actual amount is necessary for the project.
