OK, don’t freak out, people of Burnaby.

Really, everyone stay calm – there’s a real chance of snow in Burnaby on Thursday.

I’m trying to stay calm, but I live on Burnaby Mountain so there’s a really good chance we will get hit with more snow than the rest of the city.

Environment Canada released a special weather statement that talks about the real chance of snow.

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta

The forecast notes that a low tracking weather pattern is moving south along the B.C. coast that will spread moisture into the region tomorrow evening. With temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, a mix of rain or snow is possible across the region.

The department notes that the city could see its coldest weather of the winter so far. A north westerly flow is expected to bring arctic air to the Lower Mainland, and locals are advised to prepare for the frosty conditions. Daily highs will hover around freezing, while daily lows could fall to a chilly - 6°C or -7°C.

The City of Burnaby is hopefully ready to roll, especially up on the mountain where snow often cancels vital bus routes for SFU students who have just returned to class.

Not to mention the 10,000 people who live and work on the mountain.

If the snow does stick, consider staying home if you can or taking transit. If you do drive, please drive slow. It’s not a normal day.
