The Burnaby Board of Trade is starting up its Student Access Program this month.

The board launched the program with an orientation event at the Electronic Arts facility in Burnaby last Wednesday.

The career development program was created last spring to connect postsecondary students with business leaders and representatives.

Access has three components, including one that works by connecting final year post-secondary students with someone in their field for a one-on-one meeting. That person will then connect them with two other professionals, who will connect them with two more each.

The other two components of the program are the seminars and workshops offered by local consultants and business networking opportunities at student and board of trade events.

The goal is to help students build a professional network before leaving school.

CARVE IT UP WITH CITY CREDIT UNION

The Burnaby branch of Community Savings Credit Union is holding a pumpkin-carving contest from Oct. 27 to 31, according to a press release from the credit union.

There are three categories: ages 12 and under, ages 13 to 18, and People's Choice.

The two age categories are to be judged by representatives from the Burnaby Heights Merchants' Association, while everyone can vote for the people's choice category, the release stated.

"Halloween is such a fun holiday, and I have great memories of pumpkin-carving with my daughters. My oldest always enjoyed pulling out the pumpkin's innards while my youngest spent hours planning the right design," said Val Bahnman, branch manager, in the release.

"I think this is a wonderful activity. The staff and I can't wait to see what the neighbourhood kids come up with."

The branch recommends parent supervision of pumpkin carving.

Pumpkins that have been decorated or painted, instead of carved, will be accepted, as well.

Pumpkins can be dropped off at the Burnaby Heights branch of Community Savings Credit Union at 4590 Hastings St.

Prizes will be announced and awarded on Nov. 1, the release stated.
