The amount of building permits provided by the city neared 2008 levels in August, but the amount of money collected for those permits did not.
There were 192 building permits dispensed this August, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,219. In 2010, 1,197 permits were given out by August. The building permits for the year-to-date by August 2008 was 1,250. The money collected by the city for its 2011 building permits up to August was almost $387 million. Last year, permits brought in close to $342 million by August. However, in 2008, the amount the city earned on permits by August was nearly $534 million.
The majority of permits this year has been for electrical, plumbing, gas, heating or sprinkler construction - 4,256 in total. Permits for new housing totalled 1,069 in August.
