Burnaby adds seven local heroes to the roster

Burnaby city council has approved seven new local heroes to add to the city's roster. The nominees for the 15th annual civic hero awards were approved by council at the Aug. 29 council meeting.

Burnaby city council has approved seven new local heroes to add to the city's roster.

The nominees for the 15th annual civic hero awards were approved by council at the Aug. 29 council meeting.

The nominees are: Darlene Gering, past president and CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade, who also volunteers with organizations in the community;

Stephen Hughes, a volunteer with Citizen Support Services for more than 15 years;

Vicky Ma, a volunteer at Edmonds Community School and Suncrest Elementary for more than five years;

Raymond McKay, a director with the Community Centred College for the Retired and volunteer manager of the Lower Mainland Seniors Slo-Pitch League, the Moody Blues;

Jim McQueen, a member of the Southeast Burnaby Community Policing Advisory Committee and a volunteer at the Progressive Housing Society's Homeless Outreach Resource Centre;

Sonia Purewal, a volunteer at the St Michael's Centre long-term care facility and with the South Burnaby Eagle's basketball program;

Nellie Wong, a Burnaby volunteer for more than 20 years with the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion, the Family Support Institute and other groups.

The nominees are being invited to the Oct. 3 council meeting to receive their certificates of recognition. There will be a reception for the award recipients prior to the meeting.
