Four drivers are facing excessive speeding fines and have had their cars seized after an early morning Tuesday incident in Burnaby and Vancouver.

Just before 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, an RCMP officer was monitoring traffic on Highway 1 near the Gaglardi Way exit when he heard the sounds of several high performance vehicles westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway. He estimated their speeds to be approximately 140 km/h, or approximately 60 km/h more than the posted 80 km/h construction zone speed.

The officer stopped the four cars as they headed westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway approach to the Second Narrows Bridge, where the speed limit is 70 km/h.

The officer clocked the cars as going in excess of 160 km/h, or 90 km/h more than the posted speed limit.

According to Sgt. Peter Thiessen, senior spokesperson for the Lower Mainland RCMP, the drivers are from Burnaby and Coquitlam, with three of them new drivers required to display an "N" on their car and the fourth a valid Class 5 driver.

Police have forwarded a report to the provincial government's civil forfeiture office for a decision on the permanent forfeiture of the four cars. The cars have been impounded for seven days and currently sit in a Vancouver tow yard.

The cars and drivers involved in the incident are: a 2011 BMW M3 driven by a 22-year-old man with a previous driving prohibition from Dec. 29, 2010 to March 29, 2011; a 2009 Subaru Impreza driven by a 23-year-old man with two previous driving prohibitions: Aug. 29 2008 to Oct. 29, 2008 and Oct. 7, 2010 to Jan. 7, 2011; a 2010 Nissan 370Z driven by a 21-year old man with a previous driving prohibition from Feb. 4, 2010 to Aug. 4, 2010; and a 2008 Porsche Cayman driven by a 22-year-old man with a Class 5 driver's licence.

Each driver received a $483 excessive speeding ticket.
