On Saturday, April 22, the gymnasium at the British Columbia Institute of Technology felt small. Hundreds of people gathered to witness a Guinness World Record attempt at breaking the most baseball bats in a single shin kick.

But the attempt fell short for Burnaby resident Kim Carlton, a former mixed martial arts professional fighter. With a single shin kick, he managed to break two out of four baseball bats that were positioned on a rack.

“Unfortunately, the bats moved in the rack and stopped me from making the kick; it wasn't my lack of power,” he said. “The power was there, technique was there. The bats turned in the rack which made me go against the grain.”

Carlton was accompanied by his family, including his 89-year-old father, Ronald Carlton, who said he was extremely proud of his son.

“He's passionate for everything he does. I've never had a day in my life that I regret being on board because he is a great kid,” Carlton said.

Even though Kim Carlton didn’t get the result he expected, he will be attempting it again soon.

“I'm getting this record. Without a doubt. I'm breaking this record.”

Carlton has won more than 60 trophies and over 30 gold medals throughout his career. He is also a black belt in four different martial arts modalities including judo, two different styles of karate and defendo, a Canadian martial art and self-defense system that was created during the Second World War.
