A chemistry teacher smelling something out of the ordinary caused a minor commotion on Wednesday afternoon at the Burnaby BCIT campus.

According to Cpl. Dave Reid of the Burnaby RCMP, the incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. when the teacher, returning back to his class from lunch, noticed an unusual smell.

After he contacted security and security contacted the Burnaby fire department, a decision was made to evacuate the area as firefighters and the hazardous materials team investigated.

"The fire chief told us everything was back to normal by 3:45 p.m.," said Reid. "While (investigators) don't know exactly what caused the unusual smell, they do believe that the heavy rain may have caused a minor sewage back-up."

During the 45-minute incident, traffic along Willingdon Avenue was snarled.
