A group of businesses and individuals who share a Burnaby office space right next to the scene of a hit-and-run collision Monday that injured two police dog services members are raising money to help in their recovery.

The officers had been standing beside one of their vehicles parked in the 5000 block of North Fraser Way at about 11:30 a.m. when they were hit by a white Toyota Camry.

Both men, one an RCMP member and the other an Abbotsford police officer, were taken to hospital.

The Abbotsford officer, Cpl. Aaron Courtney, has since been released with minor injuries, but the Mountie remains in hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

“The incident yesterday happened right in front of our office,” said Shaun Lemmer, an IT recruiter with Benchmark Tech Recruitment, which rents office space at the NextGen Office Suites at 4300 North Fraser Way. “We just thought we’d see if there was something we could do to help.”

Lemmer launched a Gofundme campaign Tuesday, and the first five contributors were other individuals and businesses who share the NextGen space, which houses lawyers, accountants, movie production companies and a construction company, according to Lemmer.

Roberto Farinha, who owns 4HD Construction, saw the accident from his office window directly in front of the scene.

“We take for granted the work the RCMP do for us and this is another case of people putting their bodies on the line,” Lemmer said.
