Burnaby calls for local heroes

City also wants nominees for annual Environmental Awards

The City of Burnaby is calling for nominations for this year's Local Heroes - community members who have made significant contributions to the city's well-being.

Since 2007, Burnaby has recognized those with diverse interests and backgrounds who give back by volunteering for a local agency or community school, coaching a sports team or helping new citizens settle in the city, according to the city's website.

Nominees who have been active in the community for more than five years in at least two activities will have priority. Nominations are due by May 10.

Burnaby is also calling for nominees for the 2013 Environmental Awards.

There are two designations for this award, including the award for groups and individuals for outstanding environmental achievements or Environmental Stars, which recognizes accomplishments on a smaller scale.

There are six categories: business stewardship, communications, community stewardship, green choices, planning and development and youth. Nominations are due by April 15.

"This event is a significant annual opportunity to recognize groups and individuals who make an important contribution to environmental sustainability in Burnaby," said Coun. Dan Johnston on the website. "We look forward to continuing to work with these environmental leaders to ensure Burnaby continues to be a leader in environmental sustainability."
