Burnaby's St. Timothy Church is hosting a Thanksgiving food drive for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society next week.
"The people who come for assistance at the food bank are not strangers," said Rev. Stephanie Shepard in a press release. "They are our neighbours. I meet them on Thursdays at St. Timothy's, but you see them in the people waiting at your bus stop, the children in your school, the seniors at your library. We are calling this food drive 'thanks for giving,' because as we gather with family and friends at Thanksgiving, let us remember those who have less and give more."
The church is inviting people to drop off donations of cash and non-perishable food items on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. St. Timothy's is on the corner of Willingdon Avenue and Kitchener Street in the Brentwood area.
This event is sponsored by the church, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and the Burnaby Heights District of the Girl Guides of Canada.
The food bank society distributes food to nearly 27,000 people per week through depots and community agencies in New Westminster, Burnaby, the North Shore and Vancouver.
The society receives no government funding and relies on donations and volunteer labour. The society started during the economic recession of the early 1980s and was meant to be a temporary social service, but as demand continued, so did the society's work in local com-munities.
