B.C. is struggling to contain the rapid transmission of the Omicron variant and Burnaby's numbers reflect the situation.
According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence numbers for Dec. 12 to 18, 2021, Burnaby recorded 179 new infections.
From Dec. 7 to 11, 2021, Burnaby was in just double digits with 69 cases identified.
The data is released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).
Case and positivity rates for the region also saw large increases, nearly doubling from Dec. 13 to 19, 2021.
Case rates are new cases per 100,000 people by local health area and community health service area.

Yesterday, B.C. once again broke its single-day case count record, with officials announcing 1,528 infections.
The numbers forced Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to announce new restrictions in an attempt to stop the rapid transmission.
p.m. are as follows:
- No indoor organized gatherings of any size
- Weddings, receptions, celebratory events etc.
- Bars and nightclubs closed
- Gyms and fitness centres closed, dance studios closed, sports tournaments cancelled
- Seated events reduced to 50% capacity, regardless of venue size with vaccination checking, masking
- Concerts, sports games, theatres, movie theatres etc.
- Maximum six per table at restaurants, pubs, cafes etc.
- Orders are temporarily scheduled to end on Jan. 18, 2022
Personal gatherings are also limited to your household plus one other household or 10 guests, all vaccinated.
