Burnaby exhibit includes art from local children

Diane Moran is hoping some of the kids, parents and teachers she's worked with over the years in creating art in Burnaby and New Westminster will come out for a special exhibit that includes some of their work.

Her show, Creative Connections: A Hands On Approach to Community Art, is running at the Deer Lake Gallery from Sept. 17 to Oct. 8, with an opening reception set for Sept. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Much of the work was created in collaboration with students during projects she's carried out with local schools, including Second Street Community School, Cascade Heights Elementary, Burnaby Mountain Secondary, Cariboo Secondary and Queensborough Middle School.

The projects include community arts initiatives dating back to 2002, including cross-border efforts with people in Cuba and in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.

The exhibit will also include the opportunity for participants to create a collage, poem, or drawing to be displayed alongside Moran's pieces. The "Hands On" workshop will run on Oct. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Burnaby Arts Council.

Moran says her interest in creating collaborative art is focused on using art in the community to create connections, and encourage people to be good "global citizens".
