Burnaby firefighters had their hands full early Saturday morning after a fire spread quickly through dry grass at Deer Lake Park.
Firefighters were called out just after midnight to the park near Oakmont Crescent.
Aside from fire trucks, a four-wheel ATV was used as fire crews worked to contain the blaze, which ended up burning about a quarter of an acre of grass, the Burnaby Fire Department told the NOW.
Firefighters managed to get the fire under control quickly, but flames damaged a “substantial” amount of grass in a short amount of time, the fire department said.
Assistant chief Gavin Summers told Global in an interview that the grass was “tinder dry” and a bit of a surprise for this time of year. Summers was also quoted as saying there were reports of residents hearing fireworks, which is a possible cause.
