Mischief makers kept Burnaby firefighters busy on Halloween night.
Burnaby Fire Department responded to 30 calls in a 12-hour period, according to assistant fire Chief Gavin Summers.
“As soon as it got dark, all the ghosts and goblins came out, fireworks came out and that’s when our problems started happening,” he told the NOW. “We were extremely busy from about 5:30 p.m.”
Besides a ruptured gas line at a warehouse on Sumner Street at 7:30 p.m., a two-alarm blaze on the 14th floor of an apartment tower on Newton Street at 7:50 p.m., and serious police-involved rollover crash on MacPherson Avenue at about 11:30 p.m., firefighters responded to a slew of fireworks related calls.
At 8 p.m., they were called to the 200 block of Ingleton Avenue for a rubbish bin fire “more than likely” sparked by fireworks, according to Summers.
At 8:15 p.m., they were called to a tree on fire in the front yard of a home in the 2600 block of Lynndale Crescent.
At 8:30 p.m., there was a hedge on fire outside of a home in the 600 block of Stanley Crescent.
Starting just after 11:00 p.m., firefighters spent an hour dealing with an on-fire Subaru in the 5700 block of Holdom Avenue.
At that call, firefighters saw the remnants of fireworks around the car, according to Summers.
At 11:11 p.m., the fire department put out another blaze sparked by fireworks on the exterior of a home on Clinton Street.
“We were extremely busy last night,” Summers said. “They were just going from one fire to another.”
