A bush fire that scorched the deck of a Burnaby house Sunday is an indication of how dry local conditions still are, according the Burnaby Fire Department.
“This is just a reminder to everyone that the fire danger remains high,” fire Chief Joe Robertson said.
Crews were called to a single family home at 20 Ellesmere Ave. at about 1:30 p.m.
They arrived to find smoke and flames from bushes and trees at the back of the residence had spread to the deck next door.
Engine 5 attacked the blaze with its blitz gun.
“It’s one of our heavy stream appliances that we use for throwing a lot of water really quickly,” assistant fire Chief John Titley told the NOW.
There was little apparent damage to the inside of the house, he said, but firefighters had to pull down part of the ceiling in one of the homes to check for fire spreading after smoke was seen coming from the soffits.
Nine trucks and 30 firefighters responded to the two-alarm blaze.
A dog in a crate had to be removed from one of the houses.
“He was unhurt,” Titley said.
