An excavator striking a service line on a Burnaby property caused a bit of noon-hour traffic congestion along North Road.
According to Lieut. Russ Flasch of the Burnaby Fire Department, a full response of six units responded just before noon Monday to a construction site in the 2800 block of North Road.
The property, which was formerly the site of a house that burned down, was being prepared for construction when an excavator hit a 15-millimetre service line supplying natural gas to houses in the area.
The workers immediately called Fortis B.C. and for emergency services personnel. While the six fire trucks, including three engines and a command unit worked on the scene, Burnaby RCMP officers took care of traffic control.
Cars were unable to go along North Road between Smith and Cottonwood avenues, with traffic being diverted through Coquitlam.
Within 40 minutes, Burnaby firefighters had secured the scene and determined there was no public safety threat.
"All is good now," Flasch said at 12:45 p.m. "The air quality's good and we've handed this over to the RCMP as they are in charge of handling traffic."
Fortis B.C. staffers were on site talking to the construction workers on the site.
