Burnaby grad ceremonies still a go, but Marlborough school choir loses gig

One week after teachers voted 73 per cent in favour of withdrawing its support for extra-curricular activities, a Burnaby choir has been silenced.

One week after teachers voted 73 per cent in favour of withdrawing its support for extra-curricular activities, a Burnaby choir has been silenced.

The 150-member Marlborough Elementary school choir had been scheduled to perform at the Burnaby Village Museum on May 18 for the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour.

But with the uncertainty over what teachers may or may not be participating in, the choir was pulled off the list of scheduled performers and replaced by a private school choir.

The Marlborough choir had been asked back because of their memorable performance at the museum in February 2010, when the Olympic torch came through the city.

Nancy Stagg, from the museum's marketing department, confirmed the switch on Monday with the Burnaby NOW, but added that another event, a regional heritage fair to be held May 11 and 12 at the village museum, is scheduled to go ahead.

That event features students from both public and private schools in Burnaby, New Westminster and Coquitlam taking part in a competitive heritage fair with an emphasis on history.

Jodie Wilson, communications manager for the Burnaby school district, said she wasn't aware of any other Burnaby-school related events being cancelled because of teachers withdrawing their support for extra-curricular activities.

In fact, Wilson emailed a list of the schedule for the eight high school leaving ceremonies to be held at Bill Copeland between May 23 and May 30 and noted "grad ceremonies - all a go."

Burnaby Mountain leads off on May 23, followed by Cariboo Hill and Burnaby South on May 24 and 25 respectively.

Burnaby Central holds their ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, while Moscrop holds theirs that night at 7 p.m.

Alpha has theirs on May 28, Byrne Creek on May 29 and Burnaby North on May 30.

There still is no official word on whether the high school track-and-field championships, scheduled for June 2 at Swangard Stadium, have been affected by the teachers' vote.
