A Burnaby home was swept up in a Surrey RCMP investigation that has led to charges of possession of stolen mail, identity cards and forged documents against three individuals.

Police in Surrey began investigating an individual on Jan. 27 in relation to a Surrey mail theft, according to media spokesperson Cpl. Joanie Sidhu, but the investigation expanded to include incidents of mail theft in other jurisdictions as well.

It culminated in search warrants for three locations, two in Delta and one at a home in the 7400 block of Mulberry Place near the Cariboo Road overpass.

“It’s not uncommon for these types of investigations to end up having connections in other parts of the Lower Mainland just because we’re a large metropolitan area with a lot of different cities in close proximity to one another,” Sidhu said.

The search warrants turned up a large quantity of allegedly stolen mail as well as equipment used to manufacture fraudulent cheques and credit cards, according to Surrey RCMP.

On May 21, charges of possession of stolen mail, identity cards and forged documents were laid against three individuals: Cody and Juanita McNeil and Neil McRae.

“This was a complex investigation that involved the review and processing of a large number of exhibits seized from multiple locations,” Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Ryan Element said in a news release. “Knowing the negative impact that identity theft and fraud has on victims, we’re pleased our work resulted in charges being approved.”
