Burnaby’s extreme weather shelter is opening tonight, as temperatures are expected to drop below zero.
Burnaby’s extreme weather response team issued an alert, calling on people sleeping outdoors to come to the shelter at Westminster Bible Chapel.
Burnaby has no permanent year-round homeless shelter, but Lookout Emergency Aid Society runs the extreme weather shelter, which only opens when the weather is cold or wet enough to endanger human health. Tuesday night’s forecast is for rain and -3 C.
The makeshift shelter is inside the church at 7540 Sixth St., and doors open at 7 p.m.
The church is accessible by two bus routes: the 106 from Metrotown, and the 123 from Brentwood.
