Forty-eight acres of land in Burnaby's Southgate neighbourhood is up for public comment in an open house tonight.

Forty-eight acres of land in Burnaby's Southgate neighbourhood is up for public comment in an open house tonight.

On April 18, the City of Burnaby is hosting a community open house for the Southgate neighbourhood concept, being developed by Ledingham McAllister.

The site is comprised of four properties: 7650 and 7702 18th St., and 7105 and 7205 11th Ave., which is in the southeast area of Edmonds Town Centre. The Safeway Distribution Complex moved off-site, but the dairy plant continues to operate under a lease agreement.

James KM Cheng Architecture Inc. was chosen by the developer to lead the visioning process and eventual transformation of the site.

The open house will feature a panel display of preliminary concepts for the site and the public is encouraged to provide comments and ideas for the community.

"The preliminary vision for the site is a pedestrian-oriented, transit connected community that reflects the natural beauty of Burnaby," a city staff report states. "At its heart, is a memorable gathering place comprised of various unique spaces that are accessible to people of all ages and abilities."

The input provided at tonight's open house, along with further city review, will be incorporated into information at a second open house. Then the input will be used to develop a complete proposal for a comprehensive concept plan and design guidelines.

Council will consider the rezoning application that will come out of the proposal, which will go to a public hearing and eventually followed by council approval.

Then the 48-acre site will go into its first phase of development, according to a city document.

Residents can fill out an online form or send in a questionnaire by mail, fax or email to the city's planning department.

The open house is between 6 and 9 p.m. at Byrne Creek Secondary School, 7777 18th St.
