Last week was road safety week and the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement teams, ahem, drove that point home to excessive speeders.

The RCMP were “targeting aggressive driving behaviours” such as distracted driving, illegal u-turns, running intersection lights and excessive speeding.

The long weekend turned out to be a speeding ticket bonanza as a little bit of sunshine had people ditching isolation in big numbers. Burnaby parks were packed with people and drivers were literally racing to get there.

During one stretch of the long weekend, Burnaby cops nailed 11 excessive speeders and 22 regular speeders. Excessive speeding lands you tickets that range from $368 to $483, plus you get your vehicle impounded for a weekend.

“We want to thank all the drivers that obey speed limits and we want to remind those that treat @CityofBurnaby roadways like they are the Trans Canada Hwy, you will be held accountable for your actions,” read a Burnaby RCMP tweet.

Out of the drivers caught speeding, there were also three distracted drivers, two who didn’t have a valid driver’s licence, one vehicle with no insurance, one defective vehicle and one driving while prohibited.

You would think that if you didn’t have a licence or were prohibited from driving that you’d keep the speed to the limit, but nobody said these clowns were smart.
