New Westminster Police have charged a man in connection to a recent assault in Pier Park.

A man has been charged in connection to a recent assault in Westminster Pier Park – and police are investigating to see if he could be responsible for similar incidents elsewhere in New Westminster.

About 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, a teenager was assaulted while he was taking photographs in Westminster Pier Park. The teenager had to be treated at the hospital for injuries sustained what police described as an unprovoked attack.

In response to what they called a “cruel” incident, the NWPD released a description of the alleged suspect and said they were “determined to find the offender” and track him down. Police subsequently arrested a suspect.

Devin Monteleone, a 30-year-old Burnaby resident, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection to the alleged assault at Pier Park.

In an Oct. 12 news release, the New Westminster Police Department said investigators are aware of some similarities between the assault in Westminster Pier Park and an assault on Sixth Street in uptown New West on Sept. 27.

“Investigators are looking to see if this individual is involved in any other similar offences in the city,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom in a news release. “Thanks to our patrol members who worked thoughtfully and quickly to progress these investigations.”

About 9 a.m. on Sept.  27, the New Westminster Police Department received a 911 call from someone reporting that two people had been assaulted while they were walking in the 600 block of Sixth Street. Officers went to the scene, where they located the victims, who told officers they didn’t know the suspect.

Police were unable to locate anyone matching the suspect description.

Investigators ask that people with information on either assault to call the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
