A Burnaby man is facing criminal charges after Canada Border Services Agency allege that he was attempting to smuggle foreign cheese into the country.

According to Canadian Border Services Agency spokesperson Jennifer Bourque, border agents at the Pacific Highway crossing's commercial operations in Surrey caught a man attempting to smuggle illegal amounts of cheese into Canada in 2005. The goods were found in a commercial shipment.

Burnaby resident Manuel De Oliveira is charged with importing a dairy product without declaring the items; providing a false statement regarding the import of the goods; smuggling goods into Canada; and illegally attempting to import goods without a permit.

He is scheduled to appear in Provincial court on June 26.

"Canada has complex requirements, restrictions and limits on the importation of meat, eggs, dairy products, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables and other food from around the world. Plus, based on emerging threats, the import requirements for food, plants, animals and related products are subject to change on a daily basis," Bourque stated in an email.
