A 46-year-old Burnaby woman, who was hit by an SUV while crossing in a crosswalk at Grange and Patterson streets on Saturday, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to Cpl. David Chu of Burnaby RCMP's traffic services, the mother is in critical but stable condition, after sustaining a number of injuries during the accident.
"She's basically lost her spleen; her kidneys are damaged, spinal cord is damaged, head injuries, bleeding to the brain, broken pelvis, broken bones and ribs. She's in really bad shape," he told the NOW.
At about 4:30 p.m. on July 20, the woman and her nine-year-old child - both residents of Burnaby - were crossing Grange Street on a marked crosswalk when a driver, travelling westbound on Grange, allegedly hit them, projecting them forward.
The driver, a 57-year-old man from Vancouver, remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police, Chu said.
"Alcohol (has been) ruled not a factor, speed is not a factor," he said. "It happened in broad daylight, good, clear driving conditions, but for some reason this car didn't see them in the marked crosswalk."
As for the woman, she will remain in hospital for a series of surgeries to repair the damage sustained during the accident, Chu said.
"She's stable, but not out of the woods yet," he added.
The child was also injured when the car struck them, but the injuries were minor and the nine-year-old has since been released from hospital, he said.
Burnaby RCMP's traffic services unit is continuing to investigate the crash and is asking for any witnesses to contact Chu at 604-294-7922.
