The provincial government is doling out $477,720 in grants for Burnaby’s parent advisory councils.
“Parent advisory councils are comprised of devoted individuals dedicated to ensuring that our children receive the best educational experience possible. This funding recognizes their invaluable contribution to enrich student learning and experiences beyond the classroom,” said Burnaby North MLA Richard Lee in a press release.
The money is distributed every year, and the amounts are based on how many students are enrolled in each school. At $20 per student, the parent group at Burnaby North, the city’s largest school, will receive $41,080, while Glenwood Elementary parents get $1,940.
The funds are for student services, which could include extra-curricular activities, scholarships, and sports and playground equipment, for example.
The provincial Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development gives out the money, which comes from the community gaming grants pool.
Burnaby’s district parent advisory council, which oversees the parent groups at each school, is receiving $2,500 for admin costs and educational and promotional materials.
This year, B.C.’s parent advisory councils will receive $11 million in grants, according to the provincial government.
