Burnaby RCMP bust meth lab in Brentwood

Residents of an apartment building on Brentwood Drive were evacuated Monday when an active meth lab was found in one of the units.

Residents of an apartment building on Brentwood Drive were evacuated Monday when an active meth lab was found in one of the units.

Burnaby RCMP responded to a call from the building's landlord after he entered what he thought was an empty unit and discovered the laboratory.

Responding officers confirmed the lab was still active and turned off all cooking equipment before calling in the detachment's clandestine lab team and the Burnaby fire department's haz-mat team.

"There were some precursors for methamphetamines to be manufactured," said Cpl. Dave Reid of the Burnaby RCMP.

According to Reid, residents in the surrounding units were evacuated while police and firefighters secured the scene.

Once secured, the RCMP returned Tuesday morning to clear out the lab.

"We executed a full warrant and went in and completely dismantled everything," he said.

According to Reid, the lab "wasn't a large operation" but it was a functioning lab with the capacity and capability of manufacturing meth.

While the lab is still under investigation, Reid said it appeared the tenants had moved out but had left the lab in operation with the intention of returning at some point.

"The landlord was under the impression (the tenants) had moved out," he said. "It was only when he went in to clean that he found this gear."

The RCMP have yet to release any information on the suspects, but Reid said police do have an idea of who the alleged cooks are.
