The Burnaby RCMP's strike force unit is investigating a July 20 jewelry store robbery in which a stolen pick-up truck was used to bust through the doors at Lougheed Town Centre.

According to Cpl. Rick Skolrood of the Burnaby RCMP, a small group of thieves drove a stolen pick-up truck through the west side door of the shopping centre. They then drove approximately 60 metres through the mall before smashing through the front of a jewelry store.

All the suspects wore balaclavas and gloves. Once they gained access to the store, the thieves smashed display cases, made off with an undetermined amount of jewelry and fled from the scene in a grey 1999 Jeep Cherokee.

"The circumstances of this break-in are similar in nature to others in the Lower Mainland," said Staff Sgt. Chuck McDonald. "The planning and execution of this break-in indicates that this group is well-organized and that they will go to extreme measures to accomplish their goals. We are very concerned that this activity will not only continue, but may even escalate until they are caught."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922 or, to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
