Mounties in Burnaby are warning the public to be cautious after a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on Thursday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m., a man approached a young girl near MacPherson Avenue and Rumble Street and allegedly grabbed her behind and touched her genital area. The girl was able to run and the suspect did not follow, according to a media release from Burnaby RCMP.

Police describe the suspect as being between 30 and 40 years old, about 5’9”, with a medium build. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a black tuque, a black jacket and jeans.

Burnaby RCMP are reminding the public to be vigilant while walking alone and to always remain aware of your surroundings.

“Try not to talk on a cell phone or listen to loud music with earphones when walking; these distracting activities can prevent one from fully noticing what is occurring around them,” the release stated.

Other tips include planning your route and avoiding isolated or dark areas; letting someone know when you’ll be home; don’t overburden yourself with heavy bags; and carry your keys in your hands.

“If someone appears to be following you, approach the nearest group of people or business and ask for help,” the release added.

Anyone with information on the assault near MacPherson Avenue and Rumble Street is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
