A pedestrian was struck and killed early Saturday morning as he was walking along Lougheed Highway.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the man was walking along the inside shoulder next to the concrete median around 4:40 a.m in the westbound lane near Phillips Avenue when he was struck by a red 1997 Ford F150 pickup truck.

The driver remained at the scene and called 9-1-1 but the victim did not survive.

Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk said police are recommending charges of impaired driving for the driver and more charges are possible.

Gresiuk said police are now appealing to the public to come forward with more information that "can help piece the puzzle together."

Anyone who might have seen the truck, the victim or the collision at any point that night is asked to call Cst. Collins at 604-294-7922.

"A lot of people think they don't need to call the police if they drive past a collision after it happened," she said. "No, we're looking for the events that happened before, during and after. Those form the main components of our investigation...Someone out there might have a really valuable piece of information that could be very helpful to us, even if you think what you saw isn't of any importance."
