Burnaby Mounties are describing the actions of a driver who left the scene of a crash that sent an elderly pedestrian to hospital as “deplorable.”

Police said an 86-year-old man was hit by a pickup truck in an alley in the 4000 block of Hastings Street just before midnight Friday.

The vehicle took off without offering any help to the injured man, according to police.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries. As of Monday, his condition is unknown.

“This is a terrible thing that happened to this fellow, and to leave him there without trying to contact emergency services, I think is deplorable,” said RCMP Staff-Sgt. Major John Buis, adding police believe the driver and passenger knew what they were doing when they left the scene. “It’s not what we do to other human beings.”

Police are asking any witnesses to come forward with information about the case. Buis said investigators are hoping someone will be able to provide a better description of the vehicle and suspect.

The truck is described as a silver Dodge Ram pickup and the driver and passenger are described as either South Asian or Middle Eastern men.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Barker with Burnaby RCMP’s traffic services at 604-294-7922.
