A large-scale marijuana grow op in the South Slope area was dismantled by the Burnaby RCMP during an Aug. 30 raid.

The RCMP's drug section executed a search warrant at the home and were assisted by a B.C. Hydro employee, who was shocked to find an electrical bypass which was so overloaded that a portion of the meter box had melted.

"It wasn't a matter of if there would be a fire," Cpl. Stephen Bolt of the Burnaby RCMP's marihuana enforcement team said in a press release. "It was a matter of when. People need to know that these grow operations are not just hazardous to the occupants of the house, they pose a very real danger to the neighbourhood as a whole.

Trees around the grow operation residence were tinder dry on the day the warrant was executed. The proximity of other houses, as well as an elementary school, elevated the risk considerably."

Police are asking the public to report any suspected marijuana grow operations in your neighbourhood to the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
