The Burnaby RCMP is hosting a memorial today to honour an officer who died in the line of duty 45 years ago.
June 3 was the 45th anniversary of the death of Const. Terry Tomfohr, a junior Burnaby RCMP officer who died in 1967.
Tomfohr, 19, had graduated from training and only been on the job for three weeks when he investigated a complaint of several youths harassing an elderly woman in her home in North Burnaby. Tomfohr was pursuing the youths in the dark when he accidentally fell off a cliff.
In Tomfohr's memory, a permanent memorial was erected in 2002 at the base of the flagstaff outside the RCMP's main Burnaby detachment.
Local RCMP members in red serge will be part of a ceremony on Monday morning where there will be two new additions to the existing memorial.
One addition will be a Wall of Honour located inside the Burnaby detachment office.
The other addition will be a cairn located near the flagpole.
Tomfohr's brother, Staff Sgt. Leigh Tomfohr, will be in attendance at Monday's service.
