Burnaby RCMP are warning car owners about a surge in vehicle break-ins during the past week.
Dozens of cars were broken into Friday and Saturday night, Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Rob Lemon said Sept. 2.
The car break-ins on Friday happened in the 5700-block of Sidley Street. Thieves struck again Saturday night in an underground parkade in the 6700-block of Willingdon Avenue.
"If they (thieves) even see a penny, they will break in," said Lemon.
Lemon said the best protection is to leave nothing in your vehicle when you lock it at night.
"You can't believe what people leave in their vehicles," he said.
RCMP have yet to determine if the two nights of car break-ins are linked to the same person or group.
"A lot of the times, it is one person," said Lemon of the car break-ins. In some cases, windows are smashed and other times the door's locked are forcibly opened.
Lemon said police are asking for people who notice anything unusual to call the police. The Burnaby RCMP detachment can be reached at 604-294-7807.
