Work begins this weekend upgrade the natural gas line through Burnaby – with traffic closures expected.
Work begins Saturday on stretches of Lougheed Highway, from Kensington Avenue to Bainbridge Avenue, with one eastbound lane open and one westbound lane open.
On March 5, the Madison Avenue-Lougheed Highway intersection will see the southbound lanes closed on Madison from Halifax Street.
In early March, the busy Broadway/Como Lake Avenue area east and west of North Road will see one eastbound lane and one westbound lane kept open.
“We will complete construction safely and as quickly as possible – and this means closing lanes some busy roads,” said FortisBC, which is upgrading its gas lines. “Traffic disruptions will start as early as this weekend, with construction expected to be underway at multiple locations along the route next week. We know this project will create some local disruptions and we want to thank the community for its patience and understanding.”
This safety upgrade is to help ensure more than 210,000 homes and businesses across the Lower Mainland continue to receive natural gas.

Utility locate work
Periodic lane closures to locate underground utilities such as water lines are ongoing in preparation for construction. Next week this will occur Broadway, between Underhill to Bainbridge avenues, in Burnaby and on Como Lake Ave, between Blue Mountain and Porter streets.
