Burnaby road shut down after cyclist hit in crosswalk and sent to hospital

People asked to avoid this street in the Metrotown area

One person is in hospital and a road in Metrotown is closed today (Sunday) after a traffic incident.

Burnaby RCMP say its officers are investigating a serious incident that happened at noon that sent a cyclist to hospital. RCMP say they are uncertain about how serious the cyclist’s injuries are.

“Please avoid the area around Macpherson Avenue and Beresford Street,” reads a Burnaby RCMP tweet.

The driver of a northbound black Volkswagen collided with a bicyclist at a crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. The area where incident occurred is on a bike path beneath the SkyTrain tracks and is busy on the weekends, according to a neighbour at the scene.

Officers are interviewing several witnesses who were at the scene, but the RCMP hope that driver dash-cam video might have filmed the crash in which a driver struck the cyclist.

“If you witnessed this collision and haven’t spoken to police, please come forward. We would like to speak to anyone with information.”

The Burnaby RCMP non-emergency phone number is 604-646-9999.
