After closing schools and putting some events on hold Monday because of extreme temperatures, the Burnaby school district says the last day of school will go ahead on Tuesday as scheduled.

With temperatures predicted to hit 42C, the district had sent out a notice Sunday saying schools would be closed Monday “out of an abundance of caution.”

“I recognize the added inconvenience this may pose for families during what has already been a challenging time,” superintendent Gina Niccoli-Moen said in the letter. “Over the weekend, district staff have been closely monitoring the extreme weather temperatures and the resulting heat levels within school buildings. The decision to close was made after careful consideration.”

On Monday, however, the district sent out another notice announcing schools would reopen Tuesday for the last day before summer break as originally planned.

The notice said schools would reach out directly to anyone affected by the cancellation of any events Monday.
