A routine seatbelt and cellphone check in Burnaby Saturday morning ended in a man being arrested for dangerous driving, fleeing from police and driving while prohibited.

According to Cpl. Rick Skolrood of the Burnaby RCMP, an officer was conducting routine seatbelt and distracted driving checks near Kingsway and McKay Avenue at 10:45 a.m. on May 26 when a driver decided not to stop.

The police officer tried to get the licence plate of the car as it continued eastbound along Kingsway, but did not initiate a police pursuit, according to Skolrood.

Instead, the officer tried to close off the distance between his vehicle and the car that didn't stop. The officer pulled over and stopped when he believed the other driver noticed him, but several blocks later, the driver also pulled over. When the officer pulled up to the car, with lights on, the driver decided to speed off again and within several blocks, it became involved in a collision at the corner of Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue.

Police then arrested the man and are recommending charges of dangerous driving, fleeing from police and driving while prohibited against the man.

"Nobody was injured in the car accident," said Skolrood.
