SFU women's wrestler Helen Maroulis has every reason to love Edmonton.
The Rockville, Maryland junior on the Clan wrestling squad finished second in the 55 kg weight class at the recently completed women's world wrestling championships in Edmonton on Sept. 27 and 28.
Maroulis, ranked 14th in her weight class, won her first three matches before falling in the final, 6-0 to number-7 ranked Saori Yoshida of Japan.
Maroulis opened the tournament by beating Nadzeya Mikhalkova of Belarus 5-1 before dispatching Greece's Maria Prevolaraki.
In the semifinals, Maroulis faced Canadian Brittanee Morgana Laverdure and won 9-2.
Earlier in September, Maroulis won the American team trials to earning her spot in the world championships.
Maroulis went undefeated at the trials, defeating Katherine Fulp-Allen of El Granada, California 2-0 in the best-of-three final.
The win marked the second time Maroulis has earned a spot on the American senior team roster. The 20-year-old overcame disappointment earlier this year when she
was one victory away from making the American Olympic team, losing to Kelsey Campbell in two matches.
The 2012 World Championships will be Maroulis' second worlds, having placed fifth in last year's championships. Maroulis also won gold at the 2012 Pan American championships.
SFU alumni Ashley McKilligan competed in the 48 kg weight class, where she lost her only match, 2-0 to Azerbaijan's Patimat Bagomedova.
Meanwhile, back on the hill, aspiring world champions and Olympians are already deep in training as the SFU Clan women's wrestling begins their season on Oct. 20 at the Oklahoma City Duals in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
