The province is warning residents of upcoming cold weather set to hit B.C.

As freezing temperatures and snow make their way to B.C., two Burnaby shelters will be available for people needing to escape the cold.

In a statement yesterday, the province issued a warning that a series of strong storms will clash with cold arctic air throughout B.C. during the holidays, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The forecast is calling for snow and cold temperatures starting on Christmas Day. Highs range from -1 C to -4 C through Tuesday with lows ranging from -6 C and -9 C.

With windchills, temperatures can be much colder.

"We are once again facing the potential for extreme weather in our province," Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth said in the statement.

"It is imperative that we all watch the weather carefully and look out for those who are most vulnerable."

For people seeking refuge from the cold weather in Burnaby, two shelters are open during the winter season at the following locations:

  • Progressive Housing Society (2294 Douglas Rd.) - 26 spaces
    • Temporary shelter - all clients 19+
  • Lookout Housing and Health Society (7135 Walker Ave.) - 12 spaces
    • EWR (extreme weather response) - all clients 19+

A list of all provincial shelters available is available online from BC Housing.
