The Still Creek area is seeing heavy flooding.

Heavy rains have resulted in flooding in Burnaby in some familiar places.

The City of Burnaby announced at around 5 p.m. that a road closure is in place for Westminster Avenue, between Still Creek Avenue and Regent Street, due to flooding.

“Traffic control will remain on site to direct and slow traffic until water levels decrease,” read a city tweet.

One person responded to the city by saying that the Gilmore and Dawson Avenue area is “flooding like every rainy season every year. Jim Lorimer Park is under water. It’s practically a lake right now.”

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the Metro Vancouver region due to a storm bringing heavy rain into the area on Friday (Sept. 17). Rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 mm are expected, with the higher amounts over Howe Sound and the North Shore mountains.

The rainfall will intensify as the day progresses, with southeasterly winds gusting to 80 km/h this afternoon and early evening.

The heavy rain and strong winds are expected to ease later tonight as the system moves through the region.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.
