Burnaby soccer star Christine Sinclair leads Canada into Olympic semifinals

Burnaby soccer superstar Christine Sinclair's dreams of Olympic gold are alive and well.

Burnaby soccer superstar Christine Sinclair's dreams of Olympic gold are alive and well.

Sinclair scored on a bending free kick past Great Britain goalie Karen Bardsley in the 26th minute on Friday to salt away a 2-0 Canada victory that puts them into the Olympic semifinals against the United States.

Canada had taken the lead in the 12th minute on a goal from Jonelle Filigno, who volleyed a Sophie Schmidt corner past Bardsley.

Canada would hold off the host Brits for the rest of the game, as a crowd of 28,828 in Coventry went home quietly.

Sinclair's sublime finish marked her 140th international goal for Canada, moving her within two of American Abby Wambach for second on the all-time scoring list.

Sinclair and Wambach will face off next week at Old Trafford, the home of the legendary football squad Manchester United, for a chance to advance to the gold medal game for Olympic women's soccer.
