The City of Burnaby has completed the draft HOME: Burnaby’s Housing + Homelessness Strategy and is now asking for the community’s help in finalizing the strategy. Burnaby residents and other stakeholders will have until June 21, 2021 to review and comment on the draft. A finalized HOME strategy is expected to be submitted to Burnaby City Council this summer.
The HOME strategy examines and addresses challenges and opportunities across the entire housing system – including reducing homelessness. The strategy specifies actions the City can take to improve housing opportunities for the entire community and will guide City decisions on housing for the next 10 years.
“Community input has been crucial in understanding Burnaby’s housing needs and in guiding the development of an effective strategy and action steps,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “We’re grateful to the thousands of citizens who share our passion for addressing housing and homelessness issues, and have given their time and ideas to help achieve our vision of Burnaby as a community with affordable housing for all its residents.”
The HOME strategy includes directions on areas such as:
- the range and diversity of housing types required to meet the needs of residents
- City resources required for affordable housing and homelessness projects
- housing and services for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
- ways of increasing the number of housing units that are affordable to many income levels

The HOME strategy builds on the work of the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Housing which was formed in early 2019 and reported its findings to Council in July 2019. It also builds on several rounds of community engagement including the innovative Your Voice. Your Home. process through which the City heard from over 2,600 citizens.
